A Name Woven With Love

Have you ever thought about the meaning behind your name?

Sometimes a name is simply a name, but sometimes it carries a story — a reminder of where we came from, who we belong to, and the One who created us.

Recently, I found myself thinking deeply about the name Levi. As I was stitching a little banner for my grandson’s room, carefully placing each letter one stitch at a time. As I worked, I began thinking about the story woven into his name.

His parents chose the name Levi because they wanted a special connection between father and son. In Scripture, the disciple Matthew is also known as Levi. Many believe these are two names connected to the same man — a tax collector who was called by Jesus and whose life was completely changed by following Him.

Matthew means “gift of God.”
Levi means “joined” or “attached.”

What a beautiful picture: a gift from God, joined to Him, and called to follow Him.

The name Levi also carries a beautiful biblical heritage. The tribe of Levi was set apart for the Lord. They were called to serve God, care for the things of worship, and help others draw near to His presence. Their greatest inheritance was not found in earthly possessions, but in the Lord Himself.

Isn’t that the invitation God gives each of us?

To know that we are His gift.
To be joined to Him.
To be set apart for His purposes.

Just as each stitch in a banner is carefully placed, God is lovingly weaving together every detail of our lives. Before we ever understood who we were, He already knew us.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”
— Jeremiah 1:5

And again we are reminded:

“For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
— Psalm 139:13

Our names may tell a story, but our identity is found in Christ.

You are known.
You are loved.
You belong to Him.

The greatest name we can carry is not the one written on a birth certificate, but the name we receive as children of God.
