The Little Hamster and the Blessings We Find

I think it is part of our human nature to want to take charge — to believe we are the ones making things happen, building our lives, and providing everything we need.

At least… that is what we often think.

My husband once shared a little analogy using our family hamster from years ago when our children were young.

His name was Chewy.

Chewy was a tiny ball of fluff with a big personality. Every morning, he would wake up in his little glass world and begin his daily search. He would sniff and scurry around, looking for seeds that had somehow appeared throughout his home.

And every morning, there they were.

Seeds scattered all over the floor.

After filling his little belly, Chewy would begin gathering even more. He would stuff those tiny cheeks as full as possible — collecting every little treasure he could find (or at least as many as those adorable cheeks could hold without completely bursting!).

Then off he would go, carrying his treasures back to his little nest — a cozy home he had created from scraps of paper, cotton, and his favorite discoveries: toilet paper rolls that somehow found their way into his little glass kingdom.

Once his “work” was complete, he would hop onto his wheel and run with all his might… going absolutely nowhere.

And after all that effort, he would curl up and rest.

Day after day, this little routine continued until the day Chewy’s little life came to an end.

But that little hamster taught us something.

Isn’t that just like us?

We wake up every morning and begin searching, gathering, and building. We work hard to provide for ourselves and create a comfortable little place to call home.

But what if we stopped and noticed something?

What if the things we are finding along the way are not simply things we have created or earned, but gifts our Heavenly Father has lovingly placed before us?

Just like Chewy waking up each morning believing he had discovered everything on his own, we sometimes forget that we, too, are cared for by a loving Father.

The truth is, God is the One who provides.

He gives us our daily bread.

He gives us strength for each day.

He places blessings in our path — sometimes big ones, sometimes small ones — reminding us that we are never walking alone.

We are not the authors of our own provision.

We are beloved children of a Father who delights in caring for us.

And maybe the goal was never to have everything perfectly gathered, perfectly stored, or perfectly figured out.

Maybe the goal has always been growth.

Not perfection.

A heart that learns to recognize the hand of God in the everyday moments.

So today, may we slow down long enough to notice the seeds of blessing scattered all around us.

Because they were never there by accident.

They were placed there by a Father who loves us.
