Looking Forward

"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." Philippians 3:20
My husband likes to have things on the calendar to look forward to. Lately he's been talking about a getaway to the San Juan Islands, along with a few other adventures we'd like to take. There is something enjoyable about anticipating a special trip, counting down the days, and imagining what lies ahead.
As I thought about that, it occurred to me how important it is to have something to look forward to.
The truth is, life can be hard. There are disappointments, losses, heartaches, and seasons that leave us weary. If all we had was this world, it would be easy to become discouraged.
But as Christians, we have something far greater than a vacation on the calendar.
We have heaven.
A real place prepared by a real Savior who loves us.
A place where sorrow will be no more. Where tears will be wiped away. Where broken relationships will be healed, and where we will finally see Jesus face to face.
The older I get, the more precious this hope becomes.
Not because I want to escape this life, but because heaven reminds me that this life is not the end of the story.
Just as looking forward to a special trip can brighten an ordinary day, looking forward to heaven can strengthen us through life's challenges. It gives us perspective when the world feels heavy. It reminds us that our greatest joys are still ahead.
One day our faith will become sight.
One day every promise will be fulfilled.
One day we will step into a glory that far surpasses anything we can imagine.
Until then, we keep walking, serving, loving, and trusting.
And we keep looking forward.
